Street Racing Leads to Fatal Crash In Las Cruces

Las Cruces, NM (February 23, 2023) — One woman was killed and another was injured Tuesday night after a street racer collided with their vehicle in Las Cruces. The accident occurred shortly before 10:30 PM at the intersection of Lohman Avenue and Espina Street.

According to Las Cruces Police, the two women were traveling southbound on Espina in a 2013 Hyundai Sonata when a 17-year-old racing another vehicle in his 2006 Dodge Ram ran a red light going eastbound on Lohman. Las Cruces firefighters responded to the scene and performed emergency care on the two women. The 27-year-old driver was transported to Memorial Medical Center and then transferred to the University Medical Center of El Paso with serious, but non-life-threatening injuries. However, the 21-year-old passenger, Amanda Jean Murillo Gallegos, succumbed to her injuries after being transported to Mountainview Regional Medical Center.

The 17-year-old driver initially fled on foot after the accident but turned himself in to police shortly after the crash. He has been charged with vehicular homicide, two counts of knowingly leaving the scene of an accident, street racing, and a red light violation. He has since been booked into the juvenile section of the Dona Ana County Detention Center.
