According to New Mexico State Police, the school bus was traveling south on Roosevelt Road T. Police state that there were 18 people on the bus at the time, including 17 students between the ages of 6 and 15. Six of those students, along with the 61-year-old bus driver and the 28-year-old driver of the tractor trailer, were taken to a hospital with minor injuries. One student was sent to the hospital with severe injuries and then airlifted to a hospital in Texas.

Shortly after the accident, Portales Municipal Schools Superintendent Johnnie Cain released a statement saying that the student with severe injuries was hospitalized in Lubbock for several fractures. Potential Damages

Whether you or a loved one has been injured in an accident, there are several damages you may seek depending on the severity of the injuries. These includes both economic and non-economic damages, which cover a wide variety of losses.

Economic damages are the tangible losses sustained by the victim. In other words, they are losses that can be estimated based on past and future financial costs, such as:

  • Medical bills,
  • Hospitalization,
  • Medications,
  • Physical therapy,
  • Property damages, and
  • Lost earning capacity.

These damages make up the foundation of many auto accident claims. Intangible losses, however, are grouped under non-economic damages. This category includes losses that have no standard financial value and vary from person to person, including things like:

  • Disability,
  • Disfigurement,
  • Loss of life’s enjoyment,
  • Mental anguish, and
  • Pain and suffering.

At Flores, Tawney & Acosta, P.C., our attorneys help victims of accidents understand what damages they may seek based. For us, nothing is more important than fighting for victims who have been wronged by another’s negligence.
