Abilene, TX, — A two-vehicle crash that took place late Monday afternoon on Interstate 20, has left two dead and one seriously injured. This accident marks the second fatal crash to happen in Abilene in the past 24 hours.

According to Abilene Police, a semi-tractor-trailer that was traveling westbound crossed the center median and collided with a pickup truck that was traveling eastbound.

Both the driver of the pickup, William Clarence Dixon Jr., 65, and his passenger, Lori Dianne Courtney, 57 died at the scene. Dixon and Courtney were both residents of Las Cruces, New Mexico.

The driver of the semi-tractor-trailer, Freddie Brown Jr., 43, was left in serious condition after the crash and was transported to an Abilene hospital. Brown is a resident of Chicago, Illinois.

The cause of the accident remains unknown. The police are continuing to investigate.

This crash is the second fatal accident that took place in Abilene in under a week. On Sunday evening at around 5:20 pm, a pickup truck driver who was traveling southbound entered U.S. Highway 83/84 and struck a concrete barrier. Unfortunately, the driver was pronounced dead at the scene.

After the two crash’s this week, the total number of traffic fatalities in Abilene in 2022 has risen to 14. This is compared to the 16 total fatal crashes that took place in 2021.

According to Abilene police department spokesman Rick Tomlin, the local police are taking a “deep dive into the crashes to see if there is anything we can glean from them to message our citizens to be careful.”

Tomlin also stated that the Abilene police are asking drivers in the area “to be cautious, drive defensively, stay off of electronic devices and get plenty of rest before traveling extensively.”
