Pecos, NM (May 9, 2023) — New Mexico State Police are currently investigating a serious car crash involving two vehicles in San Miguel County. The crash in question happened on Saturday at around 12:30 AM on State Road 50. According to investigators, a 2016 Dodge Ram pickup driven by 26-year-old Gene Romero was traveling west at a high speed. Romero briefly left the road and drove onto the eastbound shoulder of SR 50. He then overcorrected and hit another vehicle traveling east head on. 

Despite the efforts of first responders, Romero was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash. The driver of the other vehicle was also injured and taken to a hospital. Their current condition is unknown. Based on preliminary findings, it appears that alcohol was a factor in the crash. However, the investigation by New Mexico State Police is not yet complete.
