Albuquerque, NM (March 7, 2023) — A Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office deputy and another driver were injured on Saturday night following an accident where the deputy was rushing to an unrelated standoff. The crash happened at the intersection of San Mateo Boulevard and Montgomery Boulevard.

According to officials, the officer was responding to a SWAT standoff involving a suspect with outstanding warrants who threatened to kill his wife. They initially responded to a home near Coors Boulevard and Gun Club Road. However, the suspect drove off and barricaded himself somewhere five miles south of the Route 66 Casino.

On the way to the standoff, the deputy crashed into another vehicle, causing the cruiser to roll over. Both the officer and the driver of the other vehicle were taken to the hospital. So far, there have been no updates on either driver’s condition.

Our Attorneys Wish the Best for the Victims of This Accident

We hope that both people injured in this accident make a speedy recovery. Unfortunately, there are many reasons why this accident could have occurred. We hope that the sheriff’s office takes the time to thoroughly investigate the events leading up to the crash to find the exact cause. When an officer crashes into a vehicle at a high rate of speed, there is a very good chance that the injuries to any drivers or passengers involved are severe.

Why You Should Seek an Attorney If Injured in an Accident Like This

At first glance, an accident involving a police vehicle seems like most other accidents on the road. However, that’s not necessarily the case. Filing a claim against a government agency, such as a sheriff’s office, is a slightly different process that comes with a lot of rules and procedural requirements.

Claims filed against government entities usually fall under the Tort Claims Act, which indicates when government entities are liable for the actions of their employees. Any person claiming damages due to the actions of a government employee must present their claim within 90 days of the incident. This time limit is much shorter than the overall statute of limitations for car accidents. In fact, some victims of crashes like this end up missing the deadline, which forever bars their claim. This is why it’s essential that you speak with an attorney right away when an officer crashes into your vehicle.
