astroworld festival fatalities
Houston, TX — At least eight people died and hundreds were injured Friday night during a crowd surge at the Astroworld Festival.

The incident occurred at around 9 PM CT during a performance by Travis Scott at NRG Park. According to Houston Fire Chief Sam Peña, “The crowd for whatever reason began to push and surge toward the front of the stage, which caused the people in the front to be compressed.”

The concertgoers near the front had no way to escape the situation. Immediately following the incident, nearly 300 people were treated for injuries at a temporary field hospital.

Investigators from the Houston Police Department and Fire Department are still trying to figure out what caused the crowd surge. Officials canceled the second night of the festival to assist the agencies investigating the event.
