The Dangers of Semi-Truck Crashes

Believe it or not, semi-truck accidents are becoming more common in New Mexico. According to 2020 data released by the New Mexico Department of Transportation, around 12.6% of all fatal accidents in New Mexico involved an 18-wheeler or other heavy commercial truck. In addition, there were 948 people with anywhere from minor to serious injuries in semi-truck crashes throughout the state. As a result, the total number of semi-truck accidents as a total of all reported accidents rose from 5.2% in 2016 to 7.8% in 2020.

It’s clear that an 18-wheeler crash like this one can happen almost anytime. While no one was injured in this specific crash, it’s important to know what your options are if you find yourself in a serious accident with a commercial truck.

Potential Damages in a Semi-Truck Accident

Due to the sheer size of 18-wheelers, many accidents involving a collision with a smaller vehicle result in devastating injuries. Even those who survive often have lifelong issues with injury complications and disability. In these situations, victims may pursue both economic and non-economic damages. Both of these damage types play their own role in determining the value of a case.

For example, economic damages typically include any tangible financial loss you incur as a result of the crash, including but not limited to:

  • Current and future medical treatment costs,
  • Reduced earnings due to disability,
  • Lost wages during recovery, and
  • Property damage.

While these damages seem easy to calculate at first, there are a lot of different factors to consider. How long will recovery take? Will you ever fully recover from the injury? Does a disability prevent you from returning to the same type of work? A knowledgeable attorney will take all these factors into consideration. In addition, you may pursue non-tangible damages like reduced quality of life and pain and suffering.
